Troubleshooting: I'm unable to launch the Big Screen EPG Configuration Tool?
In some cases, after making
system/hardware changes,
upgrades or driver updates on
your machine - you may be unable
to launch the Big Screen EPG
Configuration tool.
If this happens - you may see a variety of different
error messages be displayed (based on your settings) such as
:
- short error message appears in the BSEPG command window
(while loading) - and then disappears after failing to
launch.
- a popup dialog with message 'Big Screen EPG has
stopped working' (and then details with 'Problem
Signature' displayed).
- or in some cases - the configuration tool will simply not
finish loading (and exit).
The primary reason for this happening is actually caused
by required system fonts being deleted from your
windows machine. From the end user reports we've
had - the primary culprits for this scenario seems to be the
setup programs produced for some graphics cards (most
commonly on ATI or NVidia based products) - which remove
some of the required 'Segoe UI' family fonts (which are used
by Big Screen EPG and by WIndows Media Center).
Note that this will not actually impact existing
scheduled processing tasks for Big Screen EPG (as the User
Interface is not displayed) - it's just an issue when you
want to launch the actual configuration dialog to make
changes.
The known workaround to fix this problem is to
simply copy the missing fonts from another Windows 7 (or
Vista) machine -
Firstly - determine which font(s) if any are
missing.
- Open Windows Control Panel and
click on the 'Fonts' control panel item.
- A list of all installed fonts on your system will be
displayed.
- Locate the font named 'Segoe UI'
and double click on it (so the list of 'Segoe UI' fonts
are shown)
- Check that all of the following Segoe UI font
variations are available (normally 6 variants should be
listed here) :
Segoe UI Regular, Segoe UI Bold, Segoe UI
SemiBold, Segoe UI Italic, Segoe UI Bold Italic, Segoe
UI Light
- If any of these are missing - make a note (in most
cases users report the 'Segoe UI Regular' font is the
one deleted by setup programs - however in some cases
others are too).
Then goto another Windows 7 machine in your
household and go to the Windows Fonts listing (as per
above).
- Navigate into the Segoe UI font group on this other
machine (as per above).
- Copy and paste the fonts missing from your Media
Center PC into a location that will be accessible (ie.
USB Stick, Network share etc)
- Go back to your Media Center PC - and copy/paste
these missing fonts into the Segoe UI font group in
control panel (Windows will then automatically
save/install these fonts for you to that system).
Then you should be able to launch Big Screen EPG after
this change (no reboot or reinstall is required).
If you are still having problems loading Big
Screen EPG - then it's possible something else has
gone wrong on your system. In this case - we suggest you try
repairing/installing your .NET Framework (v3.5) installation
- or reinstalling Big Screen EPG itself (as last resort).
Please contact us on tech support if you are still
unable to resolve this problem (after following these
suggestions).
